Tips On Tennis Court Maintenance

By Gwen Lowe

Modern tennis courts are made from long lasting material. However, this fact should not lead to completely neglecting them. Some routine tennis court maintenance is needed to prevent unexpected wear and staining.

To begin with, these courts need to be cleaned regularly so as to get rid or mildew and molds that accumulate in shaded and mostly on the corners of these courts. Moreover, indoor courts also need regular vacuuming, and using water and detergent to clean at least once a year. In this, one may need to use bristled scrubbing materials just to make sure that molds, fungus and other decomposing substances are gotten rid off.

Also, stagnant waters ought to be drained often in order to avoid dirt accumulation; otherwise, the trapped dirt may stain surfaces and more so trap debris. The mixture of dirt and debris has been known to create sandpaper like surfaces makes it harder for players to play on. In addition, pine needles and leaves should be collected regularly, without forgetting to drain birdbaths. Failure to do so, the surface may be stained or facilitate the breeding of fungus.

The equipment used in scrubbing the surface also needs to be soft and hair-like. Such soft equipment will not damage the yard. On the contrary, hard bristles will badly damage the playing ground. When using pressure washers, the pressure is supposed to be limited to about 70 p. S. I.

As it is always said, prevention is better than cure and therefore, taking care of these courts seems a better choice than having to repair them for damages that might have been prevented. Some of the preventive measures that need to be taken into account include; caution bikers and skaters from using the court for practicing and preventing people from using non marking shoes. Moreover, people watching matches should avoid pulling their seat so as not to scratch the surface.

Drainage systems ought to specially be made to get all the water from the ground and hinder all the stray water from finding its way onto the yard. Materials that may block drainage pipes should be removed from these pipes early enough to maintain the flow of water away from the yard of tennis courts.

Landscaping is also a very important element in maintaining tennis courts. This should be done during the designing of these courts. Grass and other plants around the yard should be trimmed and removed from the surface frequently. Grounds around the courts should not be left bare since dust may be carried from such places onto the surface of these courts.

What is more, people watering the gardens and basically the vegetation growing around the court should ensure that they do not over-water so as to avoid overflow. This is known to cause formation of blisters when the water is heated up and evaporates. Finally, annual inspections should be conducted to ensure that the court is in proper condition and more so safe for players.
