Steps In Mobile Home Skirting

By Marci Glover

Manufactured houses are normally placed on blocks which are then rested on a concrete foundation. This usually results in a space between the concrete slab and the house floor. In order to seal the gap created in-between, mobile home skirting is in most cases done. In some instances they are also termed as trailer skirting. Their main use is to create a barrier between the two surfaces.

Skirting can be done for various purposes and one of them is decoration. However, the extent to which the barrier will appeal to on lookers is determined by the amount of money you pump into it. Skirting not only decorates the house, but also serves to cover other structural elements of your mobile home. The process is equally important for temperature regulation during winter and summer.

There are different kinds of materials that can be used on skirting projects. However the choice of one is highly dependent on your expenditure. The material picked also determines how the house will look like. The person doing the job should also guide you while making the decision because there are materials which cannot be fitted unless an expert is involved.

The basic thing to put into consideration before going into trailer skirting is the cost involved. Knowing the linear footage of your home will give you a rough idea on cost. This measurement is calculated by adding up the length and the width of all four sides of the structure. The final cost is dependent on how much material you will need to buy in terms of feet.

There is need to determine the height from the ground level to the base of the structure. A tape measure can perfectly do the job. You can do this by measuring the height at every corner of the building. Then measure the middle height of the linear footage from one side of the building. The final height will therefore be the average of all the heights measured.

The total cost of the project will highly be determined by the choice materials to be used. Vinyl can be a good choice as it is pocket friendly and attractive. Reil rock panels are also an option for this. They are made out of tough plastic but look exactly as stone. The advantage they have is that they are relatively cheap and their installation process is quite easy. Faux rock, which is made out of polyurethane, is mainly used when the aim is to maintain stable temperatures beneath the house. Other skirting materials that can be considered for this job are; bricks, ply wood, cider block and metal.

Once you are done with cost evaluation and selecting the appropriate material for your house, acquire all the supplies needed for the job and transport them to the site. Using a saw blade, cut the panels of the material to be used to the exact size of the skirt. Place a wooden frame on the concrete and screw it to the ground. If need be, you can as well place a frame on the base of the house too. Using a screw drill place the boards to cover the gap and screw them to the wooden frames.

As you have discovered, skirting not only decorates your structure but also helps in maintaining it. You should therefore consider doing so if owning a mobile home. The services of an expert may however come in handy if you do not have the know-how.
