Fun And Simple Indoor Gardening Ideas To Add Some Green To Your Winter

By Laura Hall

Winter months can be long and depressing for dedicated gardeners. Some of them count the days until the ground is thawed, and they can begin to plant. There is an alternative to the long wait however. You can enjoy gardening all year round if you are a little creative and implement one of the many indoor gardening ideas out there. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a newcomer to the hobby you can have green and growing plants whatever the temperature.

If you love fresh herbs but don't like to pay the grocery store prices, you can have a great herb garden right in your home with just a little imagination, time, and some basic tools. Inexpensive shelving is easy to install on an interior wall that gets regular sun. You can add towel racks to your design if so desired.

There are great ways to repurpose old dressers and taking the drawers out and using them for planters is one of them. You can repaint or strip and varnish the old drawer, replacing the hardware if it suits you. A couple of holes need to be drilled into the bottom of the drawer so water can drain. Once that is done, plant some of your favorite flowers or start your plants from seeds. All it needs is a sunny spot and sturdy stand.

If you have limited space, you might try your hand at creating a kokedamas. These are Japanese bonsais in which small plants are rooted in balls of soil and moss. They are held together by intricate webs of string. Once you get the knack of the art and the roots have sprouted, you can hang them in a sunny window or from the kitchen or bathroom ceiling.

If a wall or drawer full of plants seems too intimidating, you could try making a terrarium out of an old glass teapot. Buy extra small plants that have shallow root systems and plant them in your teapot with potting soil and rocks. Colorful plants add interest to your terrarium.

Wine drinkers have a ready source of planters with just a little work. You can take your empty bottles and cut them in half with the help of an inexpensive glass cutter. You need to sand the raw glass edges before inverting the top bottle half and placing it inside the bottom half. Adding some soil and plants gives you an instant planter.

If you are feeling ambitious, you might try your hand at a hanging planter. You need to purchase or construct a box, and use fiberglass screen and chicken wire to contain the soil. Add chains and hangers to the ceiling or wall. The bathroom is a virtual rain forest, and these plants will flourish in this humid environment. You might even try planting some exotic succulents and adding some jungle touches to your room design.

It is possible to enjoy plants and gardens all year round. You just need some imagination. Gardening indoors may not be as satisfying as digging in the dirt outside, but can be a good substitute until spring arrives.
