Ideas For Finding News As A Freelance Writer Outdoor Events

By George Foster

Some media reporters think that there is very little to write about in their communities. They cannot appreciate the opportunities before them and let these stories go by the wayside to be covered by others. For a freelance writer outdoor events can be particularly noteworthy because they often are of interest to everyone in the city or state in which they are held. You could make or break your own career by knowing what occasions to head for in search of a big story and what type of news to report to the people who read your articles or columns.

January is the time of year when newly elected politicians are sworn into office. When you want to break a story that will be of interest to your readers, you could cover the inaugurations and swearing in ceremonies. These events, which are held on the steps of the capitol building or statehouse, are typically open to the public as well as writers who either represent established media or work for themselves. You might score interviews and photos for which no other reporter can take credit.

If you are interested in finding less hard hitting news, you might cover some of the sports tournaments being held in the area. In the springtime in particular, tournaments played at both the high school and collegiate level captivate the attention of your readers. They may want to know what teams are playing and what the scores are.

You may arrive to take photos of top athletes in the city and state. You may break the story of an athlete topping a record or participating in an activity that holds particular importance to the public. You might then sell the story to the local media for a handsome profit.

Society and social page reporters are still in vogue in many parts of the country especially the Deep South. High society weddings are often the events of the year in places where social and family connections still count. As a reporter, you can cover what families are marrying into each other and where the weddings were held at each weekend. These tidbits garner a lot of interest in many places.

The bigger news could come from the names of the people marrying each other and why the connections are particularly newsworthy. Sometimes these connections have a way of changing the fabric of society in small to mid-size towns. The story will be complete once you get official pictures of the newlyweds together.

Once the society weddings are done and over, it may be time to turn your attention to fall and winter events. Many cities host festivals like food bazaars, parades, and other fun celebrations. They also may set up a live nativity scene to usher in the Christmas season. In small and mid-size towns, these stories captivate readers because they make the connection to the history of this area. People who used to live there but no live elsewhere may also read the news to find out more about the traditional celebrations.

As a freelance writer, you have plenty to cover if you just go looking for it. The news never stops in cities of all sizes, which is why independent reporters like you can make big money selling stories to established media. You also satisfy the curiosity of people who have come to depend on you for the latest news.
