Custom Hurricane Rated Impact Doors And Window Fitments

By Eugenia Dickerson

Hurricanes and the extreme weather conditions that come with them are a regular occurrence in many areas. The damage hurricanes cause to homes and businesses runs into millions of dollars each year. Many insurance companies will refuse to insure a property against storm damage, unless the property is fitted with custom hurricane rated impact doors and windows.

High impact doors and windows are quality controlled, manufactured and designed to withstand hurricanes and other extremes of weather. That does not mean that as a buyer you are restricted when it comes to choosing your preferred custom design and finish. You can still add that extra something to the appearance of your property with custom made high impact products.

Door manufacturers will generally have a range of exterior door styles to choose from. Each style can be customized to meet your design specification with the addition of glass panels and trims. Solid mahogany and other hardwoods can be treated and finished with stain to complement the exterior appearance of the property.

As with any products, buyers need to ensure they are buying from a reliable and honest source. Those selling and fitting this type of product are regulated by the industry and the state and are required to be registered. There is always a question mark over the quality and reliability of products from unauthorized sources. Cash should not exchange hands until a written contract is agreed and signed, at which point a deposit should be paid. The outstanding bill should be paid when the job comes to a satisfactory conclusion.

It is a good idea to arrange for the fitter to be on hand when delivery of your door and window frames is made. You should both inspect the products for any signs of damage during transit before signing for the delivery. If you have signed for your products and then find a manufacturing flaw you usually have to report it within a matter of days from when you received the goods.

A door that cannot be hung immediately need to be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area until they are required. They should not be exposed to direct sunlight until they have been finished. They should be handled and stored following the manufacturers instructions to keep them clean and prevent damage prior to and during the installation process.

Wipe down the door and frames to remove any dust. Only when necessary you can lightly sand down the surface to remove stubborn blemishes. Test your stain on a small part of the wood to ensure you will achieve the finish you want.

Doors, frames that are to be stained should be prepped with a pre-stain conditioner to avoid streaks and runs. On the other hand if they are to be painted you should apply a good quality moisture resistant primer. Be sure to allow the pre-stain or the primer to dry fully before applying the finish. Although you will pay more for products, preparation and fitting, your custom hurricane rated impact doors and windows will prove to be good value when they protect your home or your business during extremes of weather.
