Keep Bird Baths, Fountains And More

By Roland Stockwell

Wonderful lawn features are for those who enjoy a large yard with attractive decorative items such as koi pond, bird bath or maybe a peaceful fountain. Ensuring that the water is always safe and clean can seem like a bit of challenge, but it truly does not have to be.

When you clean the water, it is always best to use products without harsh chemicals. You need to find chemical-free products that are safe for pets, all wildlife and people. Fortunately, there are products on the market that are extremely easy to use and contain only natural ingredients.

If you have a koi pond, the AquaSpherePro or perhaps the AquaLily Water Cleaner are both smart choices. Each uses a special mix of beneficial bacteria to keep water hygienic and fresh. The AquaLily is shaped like a lily pad and contains a dispenser where you place a bacteria pack. The pack will treat your koi pond water for 30 days, and after that time has passed, you just restock the dispenser with a new bacteria pack.

The other option, the AquaSpherePro, is a biodegradable bacteria sphere that dissolves over the course of a month. After the 30 days are up, just toss in another sphere and it will keep the water clean and reduce excess organic matter and nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen. The spheres come in a few different sizes, and you can add multiple spheres to accommodate the size of your koi pond.

Bird baths are another fun feature for any yard and are perfect if you have a small space but want that garden ambiance. Healthy Ponds has created a safe, easy bird bath cleaner that will treat up to 7 gallons of water. Each dispenser contains enough helpful bacteria to keep water clean for a month. Before the first use, empty and thoroughly rinse your bird bath and fill it will clean water. Be sure to avoid cleaning the bird bath with any chemicals or soaps as the residue can be harmful to animals.

If you have a fountain, follow the manufacturer's guidelines when it comes to the mechanical parts. To keep the water clean for any animals that might visit, consider using Healthy Pond's fountain water cleaner. This cleaner treats up to 25 gallons and works for a month. If you have a larger fountain, Blast is a good product to use to speed up the decomposition of organic matter. Each pack of Blast will treat up to 2,500 gallons.
