Information On Methods Of Water Filtration

By Cornelia White

When the H2O you are hoping for consumption use might be riddled with harmful minerals, parasites or bacteria, you cannot afford to skip on water filtration. Contaminated H2O besides being a health threat to humans and animals can cause other damages like corroding plumbing, causing stains on equipment and laundry among others. It therefore important to ensure that H2O, even one used for the general purpose, is clean and safe.

One of the methods used in the H2O purification is distillation. This is probably the oldest method of H2O purification. In this method, the H2O is first boiled to the boiling point. Then the vapor rises to a condenser where cold H2O lowers the temperature so that the vapor is condensed, collected and stored. This method is considered safe as most of the contaminant is left behind in the liquid phase chamber.

Carbon adsorption method is used to remove unwanted organic impurities in H2O. These organic compounds are known to cause disagreeable tastes and odors in the H2O. Product formed as a result of the reaction of chlorine and organic compounds, Trihalomethane, in the H2O is a health threat. In high amount, this product is proven to be carcinogenic.

Micro porous basic filtration effectively removes most particles, microorganisms, colloids as well as pathogens. This method uses three types of filters that are used in succession to produce high quality H2O for least amount of energy as well as cost. These filters are depth, screen and surface filters. They have different pore sizes.

Reverse osmosis is always considered the most economical method of removing the highest percentage of contaminants in H2O. It is composed of membranes that are said to be able to practically reject all particles, bacteria and other small microorganisms. It is because of this that a majority of firms and H2O bottling plants uses this method.

Ultra violet radiation serves as a germicidal treatment of H2O. UV lamps produce radiation that are easily absorbed in the bacteria DNA and other protein leading to their deactivation. This makes this method the best way of sanitizing H2O. With the recent advances in the UV technology, special lamps are used to destroy organic compounds in the H2O.

Chlorination involves adding liquid hypochlorite in the H2O. Chlorine kills bacteria and other micro organisms by oxidizing them. Caution should be taken not only in the amount that you are adding into the H2O but also in the way you handle this chemical. Chlorine combines with organic compounds present in H2O to form halo methane compounds, which are carcinogenic. However this method is cheap and very effective.

Advances in the H2O technology have seen the introduction of more efficient and cost effective methods of water filtration. However, the basic principle remains the same. There are many benefits that are associated with using filtered H2O. H2O makes over two-thirds of human body. Contaminated H2O will negatively impact on your health. Filtered H2O does not contain many minerals that corrode metallic equipment.
