For Quality Lawn Aeration Denver Is The Way To Go

By Michelle Russell

The achievement of beautiful and healthy lawns corresponds to provision of good care. Watering, aerating, weeding, trimming, fertilizing, and mowing form the main tasks involved in proper care and maintenance of lawns. The perforation of the ground with tiny holes for allowing proper penetration of air, nutrients, and water is what is called aeration. This process requires skills and those who are not sure about what needs to be done should solicit the services of service companies or professionals. As such, when one needs to hire a good company to do lawn aeration Denver is among the best places to pay a visit.

Lawn aeration is done mostly to remove soil compaction. When the soil becomes too compacted, it develops sold particles that prevent water, air, and nutrients from circulating properly in the ground. Besides soil compaction, this process could also be caused by formation of heavy organic debris or thatch. The layer of organic debris forms beneath grass surface causing starvation of the grass.

Proper preparation is necessary before aerating a lawn. The first process in preparation is determining if it is necessary to aerate at that time. This can be done by observing how long it takes water for it to penetrate into the soil. Also, lawns that experience heavy vehicular and foot traffic should be aerated more frequently.

There are many soil types and of all of them, clay soil is the one that undergoes the most compaction. As such, it needs to be aerated regularly. The depth to which the root system has penetrated can be based on to determine if aeration is necessary. Root systems that are less than two inches deep suggest urgent need for aerating. Also, if the lawns are younger than a year, they should never be aerated.

After one has determined that the lawn needs aeration, the following step should be to start preparations. Thorough watering is a vital part of the preparation process. Thorough watering needs to be done a day or two prior to the day of aerating. When watering, at least an inch of water should be applied. One of the ways of determining if one inch of water has been applied is by digging the soil to see how deep water has penetrated.

The purpose of thorough watering is to ensure that the aerator can penetrate the soil easily and pull out soil cores. Any solid objects such as stones, stumps, cans, and wood should be removed. Irrigation heads and other functional objects must be flagged the day before. This makes it easier to avoid them when aerating.

The best time for aerating differs depending on a few factors. Some of these factors include type of grass and prevailing climatic condition. For cool-season grass such as rye, bluegrass, and fescue should be aerated at the time it is breaking its dormancy and starting active growth. This period starts during August through to October.

Warm-season grass species like St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoysia should be aerated from April to June. This grass species start to go through active growth through this time period. When aerating, one must ensure that the whole area is properly combed by the aerator. The best machines for this work are mechanical core aerators.
