A Parent's Guide to Buying Ice Skating Costumes

By Jessica Gibson

Skating can be fun and exciting. Whether you are taking lessons for recreational purposes or because you want to compete you will need the right outfit to skate in. Ice skating costumes are available in many different styles and fabrics. Here is what you need to know when you go shopping for your next skating outfit.

One thing that you need to think about is whether the costume will be used for performing or if you are looking for a costume that can be worn to classes and practice sessions. The features you look for will differ depending on what the costume will be used for. If you are looking for something for class or to practice in you should try and find pieces that are stretch and comfortable to move around in.

Practice clothes are usually comfortable, durable, and easy to move and stretch in. Often, skaters will want many thin layers that can be put on or taken off depending on how warm or cold the athlete is. You may be able to find options in stores that sell fitness clothing or dance wear.

It can be very exciting to pick out a costume to perform in. It doesn't matter whether you are young or old. A routine will finally begin to feel real once you have your costume. Performance clothing is usually flashier. It may have sequins or beading as decoration. It may also be less durable as it is not meant to be worn over and over again.

Some routines are performed solo while others are performed as duets or group routines. If you are dealing with another skater you will want to make sure that the costumes either match (in the case of a group number) or coordinate. A solo skater may want to look for a costume that mirrors the theme of the routine or one which is simply attractive to look at.

Some competitions have rules that cover what can and cannot be worn by a skater. Some competitions do not want female skaters to wear costumes that look like they are see-through. Others may put restrictions on skirt lengths or the amount of beading and ornamentation that is on a particular outfit.

If you are dealing with a larger club or skating school you may find that they will simply choose the outfit for you. This is most likely to occur if the costume will be used in a group routine or if it is for a duet. That way, they will be able to get the same style of costume in the same color and give the performance a unified look. The club may also choose for you if you are entering a competition where there are guidelines covering what each figure skater can wear.

If you are told to go out and choose an outfit there are many places you can find options to choose from. Some websites will have options that you can order. Also, stores that sell dance or athletic wear may also have options that you can choose from. Just remember to measure carefully and follow any sizing charts before you make your final purchase.
