Notes Explaining More On HVOF Coating

By Harold Long

Human beings have been able to come up with different methods aimed at solving certain problems. All of them are very advantageous. Nonetheless, they also have their weaknesses and shortcomings. Maintaining surfaces is a very important thing to do. This is because they will be more effective and their lifespan will be increased. Majority of the methods used have their limitations. For instance, it is important for one to understand the drawbacks that come with HVOF coating.

For the sake of clarity, these are abbreviations that stand for high-velocity oxygen fuel. It is a concept of restructuring surfaces in order to prevent and reduce corrosion and wear. In this exercise, oxygen is mixed with other fuels, which could be in form of other gases or in liquid form. The mixture is then passed through a nozzle at high pressure and temperatures onto the affected surface.

The method is quite expensive. The cost that is incurred until its completion is quite huge. Before considering anything else, the cost of buying oxygen and the required fuels is very high. These are not substances that are readily available in the market, which means getting them is not a walk in the park.

Additionally, the method is done purely by special machines. Mixing gases and fuels is not a thing that one can do manually. The equipment needed is of high value and can cost a lot, whether buying new ones or fabricating them. The mixture is sprayed on the surface using a spray gun. This machine is not cheap either.

Safety boots are also very recommendable to ensure that the individual does not get their legs burnt as they spray the mixture on the affected surface. This safety should be emphasized in all the work places where this kind of coating is being carried out.

Failure to observe the proportions you are mixing could lead to ineffectiveness of the coating. The spraying too is not a hard task. The only important thing is to remember to always be in protective wear such as goggles, gloves and safety boots. This is because there is a lot of heat and pressure that comes out through the spraying nozzle. If one is not careful, they could have great impact on their eyes, hands and the body as a whole.

This method is not applicable for inner surfaces such as those in a cylinder. This limits the places that it can be used on. It also implies that if one wants to coat such hidden surfaces, they have to look for another option. The machines used, despite being expensive, are also not very available in the market.

Generally, its unpleasant to have surfaces that are corroded and worn out. In this regard, it is very vital to consider processes that will reduce or eradicate these conditions. One of the best methods is use of HVOF covering.
