Useful Information Regarding Oil Rig Drill Bit

By Laura Carter

Petroleum oil basically powers the world today. Global transportation industry is highly reliant on petroleum products that the world as it is known today would stop to exist if these products are removed. These products come with so many benefits and disadvantages at the same time. For instance, environmental pollution has continued to be a major problem that is fuelling the shift to more environmentally friendly fuel sources. Here are facts regarding Oil rig drill bit.

A lot of challenges are affecting drilling efforts all over the world. Depths, formation drillability, and well profiles are the most affected aspects. As a result, manufacturers of drill bits are pressured to come up with bits that are more innovative. The required drills should be able to work faster and long enough even in environments that are continuously becoming harsher.

More is still being demanded from manufacturers regardless of the fact that some impressive inventions already exist. A higher level of precision is demanded from bits for the purposes of reducing errors while working faster. Such a level of innovation is yet to be achieved, but there is a lot of research in that direction.

On the part of petroleum drilling companies, making the perfect choice is of the major decisions in drilling operations. Even though bits look alike, they are hugely analogous to Formula One race cars. Despite the bits or race cars looking similar on their outside, what puts winners apart from losers is the design beneath the hood. The bit has to be right for the geologic formation, rig capabilities, and application.

It can be very dangerous to choose the wrong equipment. The formations to be drilled are usually analyzed properly by engineers before choosing the bits. Expected operating constraints and previous drill conditions are also analyzed to enable the tool to perform to the maximum. As time goes, the complexity of the conditions to be met keeps on increasing and changing.

Many factors need to be considered when one is choosing drill bits. They include the entire system involved, the environment, and compatibility with drilling fluids. Compatibility with motors is also important if rotary steerable systems are being used. Ignoring small shortcomings of the equipment can end in the overall cost of drilling being raised by a huge extent.

Modern bits are designed using state of the art technology. Designs are changed and perfected every day to make the drilling process hassle free. New materials are also invented regularly to be used in making these products. Diamond however seems to be the de facto material in this industry even though many others exist. The kind of material the product is made from can affect the buying cost a lot.

Different components that perform different functions are incorporated in drill rigs for the desired results to be achieved. The process of choosing the bits is done using complex systems. The performance of a bit in different environments is determined by carrying out a number of simulations. This helps in decision making.
