Learn More About PLC Programming Services

By Leticia Jensen

In the city of Hudson, WI, there are many companies which offer PLC programming services to local residents. While programmable logic controllers may be very popular in industrial automation, they have also found their way into homes. Currently, they are used in home automation systems as well as commercial building automation. Basically, PLCs can be used to automate any process, whatever the magnitude. Despite their wide range of uses, only experts can program these devices.

A typical PLC has three major types of ports. These are output, power and input ports. The number of input and output ports varies from one PLC to the next. Some devices come with 4 input and 4 output ports, but can be expanded to increase their number. The power input ports must be fed with direct current that is regulated or conditioned to prevent it from damaging the microcontroller.

The main function of input ports is to accept input signals from switches and sensors in the plant. There are many types of sensors in existence. However, the most popular ones include light dependent resistors (LDRs), photodiodes, emergency switches, voltage dividers and thermocouples among others. The signals from these devices must be transformed into a form that can be accepted by the PLC.

Actuators are normally connected to the output ports. These include electric motors, solenoid valves, bulbs and fans among other types of loads. The PLC produces a signal that energizes a relay, which completes the circuit of an external circuit. They basically act as switches.

Programmers are normally electrical engineers with a specialty in instrumentation and control engineering. They have a deeper understanding of industrial processes, pneumatic and hydraulic systems as well as advanced mechanics, so they can develop the right program to effectively control an industrial process using a PLC.

PLCs are usually programmed for specific processes. The programmer must therefore visit the plant to take a look at the types of actuators, sensors, power sources and interview production managers as well as the client. This will give them a good idea of what they need to do. The information will enable them to write a program that can effectively control the plant.

There are several languages that can be used by a programmer to write instructions for a PLC. However, the most popular programming language is the Ladder Logic. In this language, instructions are written in rungs or steps that form a ladder. Relay symbols are primarily used in this language. Others are timers and switches. The process of writing these instructions is very simple for a trained person.

Simulation of programs is very important before they are put to practical use. This process will help with identification of bugs or errors that must be corrected before the instructions are used. While most PLCs have their own in-built simulators, some do not, especially the old models. A separate simulation program may need to be obtained for this purpose.

There are many factors that must be considered by consumers when they are searching for effective PLC programmers. However, the most important ones include price, experience and professional qualifications. Prospective clients should also consider the turnaround times of a programmer.
