What To Consider Before Buying Concrete Kitchen Countertops

By Lelia Hall

If you are planning to remodel your kitchen, you may be overwhelmed with the many different options that are available. Whether you are looking for a clean, modern room or something more traditional, you may be wondering if concrete kitchen countertops are right for you. Here is what you should consider before you go shopping.

There are many advantages to using this as countertop material. Many people in Charlotte, NC like the fact that it is hard and difficult to damage through daily use. Unlike some of the softer materials on the market it does not need the same level of care and maintenance to keep it looking good. If you don't like the idea of routine maintenance, this may be just the material you have been looking for.

This is a fantastic choice if you are renovating a room on a budget. If you have a smaller budget you may find that some of the custom colors and treatments may not be something achievable but a basic countertop is much less expensive than some of the other natural materials that are on the market. If having a single piece of concrete laid down is not in your budget, consider going with tiles instead. You can find them in different shapes and sizes and these can be quite affordable to use.

You do need to remember that there are some negatives when it comes to this material. It can be a lengthy process to install it unlike it would be with other materials. While you can install tiles or stone in a very short period of time and simply allow the adhesive to dry, with sheets of this material it needs to cure or harden over a period of days. If you want to work with tiles this period of time can be somewhat shorter.

You may find that this material is not for everyone. It can look quite industrial and may be too hard for some people's preferences. You may want to consider materials such as wood block for your counters or even ceramic or stone tile instead. This is because these materials tend to have a warmer or more traditional look to them than this particular material does.

If you are only doing a partial renovation, you may find that you need to replace or reinforce existing cabinets. This is because concrete can be very heavy. It may be too heavy for older cabinets to handle and they may need to be shored up, which can increase the cost of the installation.

Once you have decided to install countertops made out of this material, you may want to think about some of the options that are available. For example, this material can be tinted or colored with various dyes so that it suits your color scheme better. It can also be customized by shaping the outer edge in a number of different ways. A good installer will have a variety of different options for you to look at.

Once you have done all of your research, your next step is to find someone who can do the installation for you. Look for someone who has experience working with this material as it can be surprisingly difficult to work with. It also helps if you have recommendations from people you know and trust that will be able to tell you who to work with and who to avoid.
