Tips For Installing Your Illuminated Switches When Remodeling Tacoma Houses

By Marissa Velazquez

Something new homeowners are finding is how installing illuminated switches when they are remodeling tacoma homes could be easy and convenient. They are becoming more popular as different designs are created that meet the needs of various applications for different homes. Because they typically use LED lights for illumination their yearly electrical requirements are very small. The different styles blend in nicely with their surroundings and even though some have a mild futuristic look, many more resemble the basic light switches people are use to using.

Many are designed to easily replace older switches so typically instillation is straight forward and is easily accomplished within a few hours. It generally takes just basic hand tools and some planning. While this is only a basic overview of this process, always read through and follow any manufacturer's instructions that are with the switches you plan to install.

This job will require some basic hand tools, many people already have in their garages or tool boxes. You will also need a set of screwdrivers to install and remove screws. You will generally need a wire cutter or a stripper and a good knife to take the insulation off any wires. You should also have some black tape to cover any wires before putting them back into the electrical box.

There are also switches that have plug in type terminal instead of older screw terminals. Generally they can be easier to put in but often are more unreliable than some using screws. Before starting an electrical project always ensure your power is shut down at the main fuse box. Turn on any lights to ensure the power is not on before beginning.

Remove the two screws that hold the faceplate on. This gives you access to the inside of the electrical box and the wiring there. There are generally two other long screws that are used for holding the switch in place that need to be removed as well. These are often located on the top and bottom of most switches.

Carefully take it out of the box so each side is exposed and any lead wires can be seen. Loosen both screws on each side that holds the wires and very carefully disconnect them from the old switch. You should have to turn them counter-clockwise for loosening them.

Typically when connecting a new switch the white or the neutral wire will go to the silver screw side. The black or the power wire will go to the brass screw side. The green or the ground wire will go to the green screw but can also be grounded to the box. Once your wires are installed cover the back and sides of your switch with some black tape.

Replace the 2 screws that hold it onto the electrical box and install the faceplate. Some light switches may already have the lead wires connected. With this type, use some wire connectors to attach them together. If you must strip any wire remove as little as possible. It is as easy as that. Now you should relax and enjoy your stylish new illuminated switch put in while remodeling tacoma homes.
