The Basics Of Selecting A Professional Keynote Speaker

By Amy Wilson

Today's corporations, non-profits, and even smaller businesses are looking for ways to motivate employees, in the hopes it improves performance. Using a professional keynote speaker has become an important part of company meetings and celebrations. That person is responsible for connecting with his audience, making his approach one that they will carry forward. A professional motivational speaker needs to have several qualities in order to make that connection:

To begin with, take no chances, hire a pro. Are you going to do it? Is one of the company supervisors going to do it? If this is so, the odds of it working and being of any benefit to you or a company supervisor that is considering taking on the task are slim to none. In fact, you run the very real risk of you or any other person that is connected to the company that should try their hand at hosting, looking like an incompetent fool in front of their peers for the duration of the event.

A sense of humor also goes a long way. It doesn't matter how skilled someone is or how well respected he is in his particular business circles. If a keynote speaker can't keep the audience engaged, then nothing is gained. A sense of humor allows everyone to poke fun at their situation and lighten up. Businesses will gain employee respect when can look at this side of the fence. A sense of humor doesn't mean the individual should be Robin Williams, but he does need to be fun.

When you hire the services of this expert, you pick the information you want to be covered. They might help you come up with a topic if you are just trying to hype the employees about the mission and vision of the company. The more information about the topic you have in advance will give the speaker ample time to be more than prepared for the speech.

A new way of thinking. The leaders of the company need to work with the professional speaker to have that person add new tricks to the bag. It may be trying new technology, or new businesses techniques, but it could also be aiding the employees in thinking about the way they perform in a different light. An engaging speaker will be able to put the fire back in their bellies for personal and career improvement.

You can also attend a seminar or an event (with permission of course) that gives out the same topic as yours and check out the expert that they have. This is similar to watching an orator in video; this is just doing it live. This is also a way on how to gauge the audience's reaction to the presenter. You can also identify if the person has a natural rapport with the audience, or if they are able to deliver the speech in a manner worthy of a great public orator.

Maintain control of the situation - Many people who offer this speaking service have a star mentality, and believe that you are there to serve them. Remember, you are the one pushing their performance, and therefore you are the one helping to further their careers just as they are helping to sponsor your event. It's a two way street, but the difference in power is that you can always hire someone else. Be firm and up front about what is expected, and don't let them make changes or alterations at the last minute unless necessary.

It's a Time for Your Star to Shine. Remember that in the end you benefit from your companies event being a success. This means that it is in your best interest that you procure the most qualified talent possible. An expert speaker is crucial to a successful event and those that tell you otherwise are the same folks that are going to be talking behind your back if the event that you oversee is anything less than successful.
