What An AI Medical Scribe Does

By Eric Scott

Necessity is the mother of invention. This holds true as the healthcare industry strives to give the best service it can provide to the community. Recent innovations have paved the way to create an AI medical scribe that is used by physicians today.

It truly is a nightmare to deal with paperwork. Yet, this is still necessary. Healthcare professionals are not an exception to this. They have to do this administrative work in order to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or HIPAA.

In creating this, innovators have worked alongside physicians to determine which aspects they need to improve in the current system. The EHR or the electronic health records is a system which digitally archives in real time the medical reports of the patient. They aim to reduce the administrative work of the physician so they would spend less energy on that side and go back to putting more energy in their line of work in the healthcare industry.

As they observed, they notice how burned out the healthcare professionals are during office hours yet they still continue on to do necessary documentation. Their cognitive must have been overused and exhausted from the continuous sessions they do during the day. Hence, they created this device to lessen the burden of this work. They are able to go home earlier than normal and to have a much needed rest.

This software is an application system which uses artificial intelligence. It helps healthcare professional jot down information regarding the results of medical tests on their patient. Its name already defines its main job which is to write the findings of the physician during consultation. It then aggregates all those for easy documentation.

It has voice activation so they would not have to push buttons anymore. It starts automatically. With a few voice commands like pulling up labs tests, it can do the required work with efficiency. They would not need to worry about the documentation part anymore. Hence, they are able to focus with the needs and care of their patients.

One advantage is that this is a learning system. Meaning, they do not have to update its data bank like the normal computer software regularly. It has an embedded program to recognize the medical jargons they throw along the conversation, even if it is said in short hand or acronym.

Both the healthcare professional and institution will benefits from this. They save time from inputting the medical jargon into the system and more time to discuss the medical status of the patient. At the same time, their costs lessen because they do not have to contact the company provider to update the system all the time.

What makes this great and useful is it did not interrupt the workflow that they have going on. They are able to focus with what is important, that is the patient. They also no longer need to ask for any medical results from the diagnostics lab and leave their patient lying in wait. It increases their efficiency and productivity making their daily work fulfilling and successful.
